Alexander Scriabin Piano Concerto Op. 20
Daniil Trifonov, piano Mariinsky Orchestra Valery Gergiev
"These are two exceptional discs in many ways. The Scriabin Concerto seems to me particularly successful, because Trifonov has a fine instinct for its ebb and flow of moods and for just how much dreamy dalliance he can afford without tipping over into self-indulgence. Prokofiev’s monstrously demanding Second Concerto sees him completely in his element so far as hyper-virtuosity is concerned: I doubt whether the bustling, motoric second movement or the helter-skelter outer sections of the finale have been more daringly or excitingly driven, and if parts of the first and third movements feel reined in to the point of being laboured, there are (arguably) legitimate character-driven reasons for this approach. (...) Something of a mixed bag, then, with a big ‘wow!’ factor balanced by some moments of ‘whoa!’."

Richard Barker pianoforte
"Richard Barker plays rarely heard piano music by Gioachino Rossini on an original 1858 Pleyel instrument similar to the one Rossini himself possessed in Paris. Enjoy the stream of delightful exquisite music with just a hint of melancholy that the hands of Richard Barker magically bring to life for you." (Illiria)

"In the present recording, the organists Liuwe Tamminga and Leo Van Doeselaar have selected eleven double-choir instrumental pieces (from Giovanni Gabrieli. This selection of eight-to-twelve-part pieces, performed on two of the most beautiful and suitable organs for this repertoire—the two magnificent organs of the San Petronio Basilica in Bologna (unfortunately no comparable organs have survived in Venice) — offers an excellent panorama of Giovanni Gabrieli’s double-choir compositions in the older (canzoni and madrigals) and newer (sonate) forms and styles of the two decades between the late 16th and the early 17th century in Venice."
BRUCKNER - Sinfonia No. 8 in Do minore • Thielemann
I Allegro Moderato II Scherzo. Allegro moderato - Trio. Langsam III Adagio. Feierlich langsam; doch nicht schleppend IV Finale. Feierlich, nicht schnell
Wiener Philharmoniker Christian Thielemann
"The playing is magisterial with weighty sonorities, yet Thielemann encourages a transparency in the filigree string writing of the Scherzo of almost chamber-music delicacy. However, the Adagio and 'Solemn' Finale are spaciously conceived rather than slow...Any new Thielemann recording of an Austrian masterwork with this orchestra is an event."
