C'è chi sostiene che il clavicembalo sia meno espressivo del pianoforte – e quelle registrazioni delle Variazioni di Goldberg che oggi sono più conosciute sono effettivamente quelle di Gould, Arrau o Schiff che le hanno eseguite al pianoforte. Ma Bach le scrisse per il clavicembalo - o, più precisamente, nel 1742 per il conte Carl von Keyserlingk, perchè fossero suonate dal suo protégé di clavicembalo, Johann Goldberg. Lo specialista barocco olandese Gustav Leonhardt, primo clavicembalista della generazione del dopoguerra e soprannominato "Il grande guru della musica barocca" fece tre registrazioni delle Variazioni Goldberg, e questa è la seconda, incisa nel 1965. In questa registrazione, dimostra quanto può essere espressivo uno strumento come il clavicembalo (anche se, dobbiamo ammetterlo, ha usato una versione modernizzata dello strumento). Ciò nonostante, dopo aver ascoltato questa registrazione classica, ci si chiede davvero se si vuole tornare al pianoforte. Altamente raccomandato.
